Command Task

GTO TESTS : THE TECHNIQUES OF COMING OUT SUCCESSFUL IN THE COMMAND TASK

 

COMMAND TASK :  The aim of this Task is to test the candidates’ – quality of leadership/ planning/ command & control/to influence the group/speed of decision/application of work.       

  • The GTO selects each candidate of the group turn by turn to act as a Commander and perform the tasks similar to that of PGT. He is given 3 candidates as his assistants. He should select men who are active, physically strong and cooperative.
  • The GTO initially engage the mind of candidate with his personal matters or on the subject not related with command task.  At the same time, GTO takes the candidate to the site of the command task and suddenly explains about the task which is to be carried out under his leadership.
  • He gives little time to the candidate to make his plan and ask him to call the candidates required to execute the task.  Here the leader can call the candidates of his choice.  Remember call the right candidates and according to the requirement.
  • The leader calls the candidates to work and explains about the problem, requirement and his plan to execute within the time allowed.  The leader generally allots the duty to each member.  The work is executed under the leadership of that candidate.  Remember you should also involve yourself with the task in a manner of giving guidance to the members from time to time as required.  You should some time extend your help to them where they are stuck off. He should keep himself at the centre of activity all the time 
  • The Commander must actively supervise the working of the group.  He must see that every member is giving maximum cooperation and help in the execution of the plan.  The Commander need not do any physical work himself unless it becomes necessary. Don’t shout about/mumble/harsh to the assistants. Look smart and behave in a commanding and measured tone.
  • During the process, if at any stage, the leader finds that there is a bottleneck and he cannot proceed further in the executions of his plan, he may invite suggestions from his team members.  But this should be very rare.
  • The GTO some time puts, pressure on you for your mistakes, omissions or for the mistakes of your members.  He will also pressurize you to complete the task speedily.  You should listen him but do not come under mental pressure.  You should not put your men under mental stress under these circumstances.  That will be possible when you will keep on acting in ka natural manner and without any nervousness.  The very purpose to put you under pressure by the GTO is to adjudge your balance of mind under stress.
  • When task is completed you should convey your appreciation to your members, who worked under your orders and for you.
  • Remember when you are called by any other leader, you should work whole heatedly with best performance to make his task successful.  That will give positive impression to the GTO about you.
