• Physical fitness is an automatic confidence booster.
• Turnout. Your turnout is a part of your personality. You can’t be going to screening in track pants or shorts or casuals for a military selection process. Always take care of your turnout in your daily life.
• If you have not substantially practiced for OIR tests in advance, you may find the OIR at the board as a shocker. Make sure you have practiced OIRs.
• Practise writing story for PPDT at home many times so that your observation becomes natural at the board.
• Spoken English. There is no escape from this one. Strengthen it as much as you can. Learn the art of speaking.
Narration. The moment a candidate opens his mouth to narrate his/her story, it takes only 10 seconds to gauge if he/she has come prepared or not. His/her body language, command over spoken English, confidence & boldness, essentials of speaking the story as per expectations — these all decide if he/she should be considered for the discussion part as well.
• Discussion. Most of the candidates complain ‘I could not get a chance to speak’ because nobody was listening to anybody’. That is naturally true. There are many candidates, sitting in one group to narrate stories and then discuss. Obviously, not everyone will be able to speak their ideas. That is why you have to be aggressive in discussion. You can’t just sit and expect decency from others in those few minutes. By aggression, it is not meant that you howl and shout without substance. Your bold voice will draw attention and you can’t grab attention by sitting quietly always.
• Accept the luck factor in screening. You have made your move; your narration was perfect, you gave valid inputs in discussion but got screened out. No worries. Sometimes it is also about the availability of officers at the board, and other factors.
• Clearing the screening is NOT to be done at the board, it is done in your efforts before going to the board. The more your have practiced speaking, taken care of your fitness+habits+turnout, the more you will be at ease with yourself throughout the SSB.
